Ivan Cantu, 50, was pronounced dead at 6.47pm local time in the state penitentiary in which he was incarcerated in Huntsville, Texas, a small city about 70 miles north of Houston. The execution had been slated to begin at 6pm local time (midnight GMT).
His final statement to say he did not kill Kitchen and Mosqueda, adding he did not believe his execution would bring the families any closure or peace.
Cantu’s execution could yet be halted or postponed, though a federal appeals court on Tuesday declined to stop the planned lethal injection or let the 50-year-old raise new challenges.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals also rejected an appeal and a motion for a stay of execution.
